Always dreamt of working in the rail industry? Perhaps you’re looking to make a fresh start in 2021 after what feels like a long and dismal year – due to the coronavirus pandemic?
The good news is, Real Skills specialise in railway training and can help you to pursue a career either on the railways, trackside or on the platform. But first things first, you’re going to need a PTS card.
PTS (Personal Track Safety) cards offer a simple and secure way to check that everyone working on the railway has obtained the relevant Personal Track Safety training and qualifications.
What can you do with a PTS Card?
This is something that we get asked a lot by candidates, along with why do I need a PTS card? The answer is simple. Having a PTS card means you can work as a rail track maintenance worker and:
- Inspect the railways
- Maintain Network Rail infrastructure
Workers simply need to present their card when they report to the site – making it quick and easy to check that any maintenance, repairs or renewals are being carried out by trained personnel – ensuring maximum safety at all times. If they don’t have one, or have forgotten it, they won’t be allowed to work.
The reason why PTS cards are so important is that they store the holder’s qualification records on the electronic chip which can be accessed via a unique QR code and viewed on the Sentinel database. This means that for every training course you complete, the qualification will be automatically added to your PTS Sentinel card.
Take a look at our blog on ‘The benefits of being a PTS card holder’ for more reasons why you should apply for PTS training and have a PTS card.
Apply for a PTS card today
We must point out that PTS cards are only available to individuals who are employed/sponsored by a rail engineering company (i.e. Network Rail). They are not offered to the general public.
To obtain your PTS card, you must complete the initial Personal Track Safety course which is the entry-level qualification for anyone wanting to pursue a career in the rail industry. In order to book a place on the course, you must pass a medical test, as well as a separate drugs and alcohol screening to ensure you are medically fit to work in a fast-paced environment. Upon completion, the PTS AC qualification will be uploaded to your PTS card within 48-hours.
Typically, there is a fee for the PTS card but it is valid for 5 years, and your sponsor should cover all costs for you. They will also contact Sentinel on your behalf and provide them with the required information – meaning all you have to do is sit back and wait for it to arrive within 10 days.
