Representatives from across the rail industry attended The Institution of Mechanical Engineers Railway Division Annual Luncheon recently at Grosvenor House, London.  Dee McDermott, Managing Director of Real Skills Training Ltd, was invited along to join the table sponsored by RTS Infrastructure at the luncheon, which is a principal event in the rail calendar.  Richard East, the Chairman of Railway Division, hosted the prestigious event, which gives the industry the opportunity to network and raise the profile of their respective organisations.

The Railway Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers is one of eight engineering divisions of the Institution, and was formed in 1969 consisting of members of all grades professionally involved or interested in the science and practice of railway engineering.

Keynote speaker Bernadette Kelly, who became Director General, Rail Group, Department for Transport in September 2015, gave a compelling speech highlighting the current and planned projects across the UK and praising the work of the industry for their role in supporting and moving forward with record investment in rail, roads, ports and airports.  The current and planned investment will enable the UK to deliver new world-class infrastructure, creating opportunities for people across the UK and will ensure that every part of Britain benefits from a growing economy and that everyone who works hard gets the opportunities they need to succeed. Transport infrastructure investment of this scale is creating thousands of jobs opportunities throughout the country.

Guests attending the event heard speakers highlight the current targets within the industry and reinforce the sectors commitment to raising awareness of the golden opportunity that is available to make the transport infrastructure the career of choice for young people. There is a desire to ensure the diversity of the workforce, to grow the number of transport apprentices and to raise skills levels throughout the sector, with the sector laying the foundations for making 2018 a year to celebrate our nation’s engineering achievements and to inspire the next generation of engineers.

As an investment in the workforce of the future, Real Skills Training Ltd are actively recruiting young people at our Leeds training venue, hosted by RTS Infrastructure at the Rail Depot in Holbeck.  With a fully functional rail siding, Real Skills are able to offer a valuable programme, helping candidates to focus on maximising their progression to the next stage of education, training or employment in the rail industry.
